Lag, frame drops and overheating can ruin a good match. Most performance problems on phones have simple fixes. Work through this checklist from top to bottom. It works for PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, Call of Duty: Mobile, cricket games and more.
Is it your phone or your internet?
- Choppy picture or stutter even offline means a device problem (FPS). Start with the phone fixes below.
- Characters teleporting, delayed shots or a high ping number means a network problem. Jump to the internet fixes.
Phone fixes (FPS and stutter)
- Restart your phone before long sessions to clear memory.
- Close background apps, especially social media and video apps.
- Free up storage. Keep at least 2 GB to 3 GB free.
- Lower graphics settings. A stable medium frame rate beats an unstable high one. Turn off shadows and anti-aliasing first.
- Turn off battery saver while gaming, because it slows the processor.
- Use your phone’s game mode (Game Booster, Game Space or Game Turbo, depending on brand) to block notifications and prioritise the game.
- Keep it cool. Remove thick cases, avoid direct sun and don’t play while fast charging. Hot phones slow themselves down.
- Update the game and system software.
- Clear the game’s cache (Android): go to Settings, then Apps, then the game, then Storage, then Clear cache. Don’t tap “Clear data” unless your account is linked, or you may lose progress.
Internet fixes (ping and lag)
- Use Wi-Fi close to the router, or a strong 4G signal.
- Pause downloads, streaming and updates on other devices on the same Wi-Fi.
- Select the nearest server region in the game settings when you have the choice.
- Toggle airplane mode on and off to reconnect to a better mobile tower.
- Restart your router if ping suddenly jumps.
Avoid “booster” and “GFX tool” apps
Many “game booster” or graphics-unlock apps do little except show ads, and some break game rules and get accounts banned. Stick to your phone’s built-in game mode. See how to download games safely.
Still lagging?
Your phone may be below the game’s requirements. Try lighter alternatives from our list of games for low-end phones, or switch to offline games when the network is weak.
