Games are a great way to relax and connect with friends. Like anything fun, they’re best in balance. These practical tips help players of all ages, and their parents, keep gaming healthy, safe and affordable.
For players
Take regular breaks
Stand up and stretch every 45 to 60 minutes. Use the 20-20-20 rule for your eyes: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Protect your sleep
Stop playing at least an hour before bed. Late-night matches and bright screens make it harder to fall asleep.
Mind your posture
Hold the phone at chest or eye level, keep your neck relaxed, and avoid gaming while lying flat for long periods.
Keep the volume safe
With earphones, keep volume below about 60% and take listening breaks.
Set a spending limit, or spend nothing
All the games we recommend can be enjoyed for free. If you do buy items, decide on a monthly budget first. Never spend money you need for essentials.
Stay away from betting
Apps that take deposits and promise cash winnings are gambling, not gaming. Read the warning signs in our safe download guide.
For parents
- Check age ratings on Google Play and the App Store before installing.
- Use parental controls: Google Family Link on Android, or Screen Time and Ask to Buy on iPhone.
- Agree on screen-time rules together, such as homework first and no phones at dinner.
- Play together. Ludo, carrom and chess are great family games.
- Talk about strangers online. Children shouldn’t share their name, school, photos or location in game chats.
Signs it may be too much
- Skipping school, work, meals or sleep to play
- Feeling irritable or anxious when not playing
- Spending more money than planned, or hiding spending
- Losing interest in friends, family or other hobbies
If you notice these signs, cut back gradually, set app limits and talk to someone you trust. If gaming or gambling feels out of control, speaking with a doctor or counsellor can help.
