Fake game apps, modded APKs and “play and earn” schemes are some of the most common ways phones get infected and money gets stolen in Pakistan. This guide shows you how to download games safely and spot a scam app before it’s too late.
The golden rule: use the official store
Download games only from Google Play on Android or the App Store on iPhone. Both stores scan apps for malware, show the real developer and let you request refunds. Every game we recommend, from the best Android games to the best iPhone games, is available there.
6 checks before you tap Install
- Check the developer name. Fake copies often use a similar icon with a slightly different developer name.
- Look at downloads and reviews. Read the recent one-star reviews for warnings about ads, crashes or scams.
- Read “Data safety” (Android) or “App Privacy” (iPhone) to see what the app collects.
- Question permissions. A puzzle game doesn’t need your SMS, contacts or call logs.
- Keep Google Play Protect on in Play Store, then Profile, then Play Protect.
- Update regularly. Updates fix security holes.
Why to avoid “mod APKs” and unofficial downloads
- They can hide malware that steals passwords, wallet details or OTP codes.
- Games can permanently ban accounts that use modded versions.
- You don’t get security updates.
- Android warns you about “unknown sources” for a reason, so never turn that setting on for a random website.
Red flags of a scam or gambling app
Be very careful if a “game” app or website:
- Asks you to deposit money through JazzCash, Easypaisa, a bank or crypto
- Promises daily earnings, guaranteed wins or “easy income”
- Is only available as an APK from a website, or on iPhone as a “web app” or profile
- Pays commission for recruiting friends (an “agent” or “refer and earn” scheme)
- Asks for your CNIC, wallet PIN or OTP
- Pushes you through WhatsApp or Telegram “support” groups
Real-money betting and casino apps are illegal in Pakistan, and users have no protection if withdrawals are blocked or accounts are frozen. If you see these signs, don’t install the app.
If you already installed a suspicious app
- Uninstall it straight away.
- Run a Play Protect scan.
- Change the passwords for your email, social media and mobile wallet.
- Call your wallet or bank helpline if you shared payment details, and ask them to block suspicious activity.
- You can report online fraud to the FIA’s cybercrime wing.
Protect children’s devices
Use Google Family Link on Android, or Screen Time with Ask to Buy on iPhone, so new downloads and purchases need a parent’s approval. More in healthy gaming tips.
